Lets rebuild climate resilient communities

Building Back Resilient After Cyclone Gabrielle response

Hawke’s Bay has been devastated by Cyclone Gabrielle, and Hawke’s Bay Environment Centre has stepped up to awhi and support our community.

We have more than 300 volunteers and many supporting businesses on the ground that have helped to coordinate the provision of meals, food, clothing, bedding, medications and more to displaced people and volunteers across the region.  So far we have delivered more than 3000 hot meals a day to our community, supported 20 + community hubs with their essential needs and helicoptered in support to rural communities.  This is just the beginning.  We have many more miles to go.  And we will need all the help we can get. Listen to an update from our CEO Emma Horgan-Heke on Radio New Zealand here on what we have achieved with the community and how we have a plan to walk alongside and support our community in rebuild of resilient communities within climate and environmental limits.

We are here to support you in the rebuild of climate resilient communities. We will be running a series of debriefing workshops with the 30 plus communities we have supported over the last few weeks. We want to understand what the communities need to be resilient for another event like this.

This will lead into discussions transition towns or communities. Transition Towns are made up of local communities that proactively reduce their dependence on fossil fuels and help mitigate climate change, by re-localising, shifting production closer to home and creating functioning communities. This might include looking at community energy, localised community food gardens and pantries, mesh systems for connectivity and any other area that the community identifies. We will bring in guest speakers on the areas our communities are interested in and help look for appropriate funding that may help with the transition.
