The Biodynamic Organic Education Trust (BDOE) was established in May 2000 with the immediate objective of responding to the increasing interest in biodynamics and organics in New Zealand.
The aims were
- To network with people in the industry and promote organic over conventional methods of food production.
- To run field days, seminars and short courses to teach and demonstrate biodynamic agriculture.
- To support and work with the Diploma Course in biodynamics at Taruna College.
- To promote the establishment of a professional biodynamic consultancy in new Zealand.
Funding was provided by the Community Employment Group to run a programme of workshops and field days as well as an annual Organic Expo.
The first Organic Expo was held at the Hawke's Bay A&P Show in October 2000 and consecutively over the next three years with ever growing awareness and numbers visiting the Organic Expo stalls. These, along with the numerous workshops in topics relating to organic and sustainable gardening, farming, building and beyond, proved a huge success.
Over 2002 and 2003 the BDOE activities broadened into “Educating Towards Sustainability“ and in May 2003 made a successful bid for funding from the Ministry for the Environment through the Environment Centre Fund. That September the doors of the Environment Centre as we know it opened and in September of 2004 the Biodynamic Organic Education Trust was renamed to “Sustaining Hawke's Bay Trust”.
In September 2018, the Environment Centre moved to its current location at 1004 Karamu Road North, Hastings.
